Abstract:A compost bin was designed for small-scale food waste composting. The compost bin is composed of an automatic control system, a reaction chamber and a ventilating and stirring device. The reaction chamber has a capacity of 43 L, and the automatic control system can realize automatic control of temperature, stirring and ventilation. The food waste and auxiliary materials were put into the reaction chamber, and then stirred and mixed by a stirring device. The aerobic conditions were maintained by the ventilation system, and the temperature control system controls the temperature of the reaction chamber. Composting bin performance was conduct under the initial feed of 30 kg, the temperature at 40 ℃, and the moisture content of 55%. The weight loss, the odor index, the moisture content, the pH value, the electrical conductivity, organic matter, the C/N and other physical and chemical indicators were test, which that can indirectly reflect the maturity of the compost during the composting process. The test results showed that the weight loss of the compost pile reached the maximum value of 3.5 kg/d on the 5th day of composting, and on the 20th day of composting, the compost sample changed from light yellow to dark brown, the odor index decreased to , and the pH value was 7.1. The organic matter content is 81.6% with the C/N of 19.5, which showed the compost has been decomposed.
