This paper briefly reviewed the process of researching the dual-purpose genic male sterile line and summarized the main problems in its breeding and utilization. In this review, we also put forward strategies to provide reference for breeding and utilization of the dual-purpose genic male sterile line. These strategies include to combine regular breeding and molecular breeding tightly to create germplasm resources of male sterile line，to accelerate high-quality and multi-resistant breeding of male sterile line to meet the need of market and to make scientific decisions about seed production bases and appropriate time and periods for seed production to ensure the sustainable development of two-line hybrid rice.
